Pathology Services
Our SANAS and KENAS accredited chemical pathology laboratories offer routine and urgent chemistry analysis.
Chemical pathology is the branch of pathology concerned with detecting, measuring and interpreting non-infectious, sub-microscopic molecules. These non-infectious molecules are usually measured in bodily fluids like blood, urine and cerebrospinal fluid but chemical pathology is also responsible for measuring these substances in solids like stool, hair and tissue biopsies.
As medical doctors, the pathologists in pathology laboratories provide a consultative service to our clinicians. This service aids in the interpretation of results and provides guidance on selecting the appropriate tests to confirm a diagnosis, prognosticate, monitor and manage patients.
Branches include biochemistry, endocrinology, inherited metabolic disease, serology, toxicology and molecular pathology.
Our SANAS and KENAS accredited, haematology laboratories provide consistent quality results in all aspects of routine and specialised haematology, flow cytometry and bone marrow assessment.
Immunophenotyping with flow cytometry is an essential diagnostic tool together with morphology and molecular genetic testing for the diagnosis, classification and monitoring of haematological malignancies (leukaemias). Consequently, it has acquired a prominent position in the current World Health Organization (WHO) classification of haematological malignancies.
Immunophenotyping requires careful selection of unique combinations of individual markers based on their degree of specificity for the identification of a given cell lineage, maturation stage and aberrant phenotype as per international standards.
Our comprehensive panels encompass a number of markers selected based on validated consensus recommendations (Euroflow) to ensure provision of accurate and relevant information in the diagnostic work-up of heamatological malignancies. See Flow Cytometry Panels for number of markers.
Limited panel markers restriction may be requested upon specific discussion with the referring doctor.
Our SANAS accredited histology laboratory offers a diagnostic service to both the private and public sectors.
Our team of anatomical pathologists, technologists and technicians, with vast amounts of experience offers a diagnostic and consultative service on a number of tissue samples including biopsies and resection specimens.
Ancillary techniques such as immunohistochemistry, and molecular techniques form part of the tools utilised in the improving diagnostic accuracy.
Participation in multidisciplinary meetings and cancer forums ensures that our pathologists are in constant contact with treating physicians and offer a cutting edge clinically relevant diagnostic service.
Our SANAS accredited cytology laboratory analyses both gynaecological and non-gynaecological cytology. Cytology is used to determine the nature of lesions and often to look for infections. It is mainly a screening tool to triage patients’ management.
Our non-gynae service looks at fluids such as urines, pleural and ascitic fluids, breast fluids and CSF’s, and fine needle aspirations (FNA’s). The FNA’s are submitted by referring doctors, or obtained with us on site in the radiology departments, (Rapid on-site evaluation- ROSE), or done by us on palpable lesions in our clinic.
Our samples can often be sent for molecular analysis, cultures or other further testing if required. If you are submitting a non-gynae sample, please note that Specimen should be submitted as air-dried and alcohol fixed slides in a slide holder with no cover slip.
Our SANAS and KENAS accredited microbiology laboratories provides a full range of diagnostic services for the detection and monitoring of bacterial and fungal infections.
Microbiology reports are reviewed and verified by a pathologist and are correlated with clinical information, where available. Our consultant pathologists are available to discuss individual cases with the referring doctors to provide treatment advise for selection of appropriate antibiotics based on the pathogens identified and their sensitivity profiles. A free consultative service on infection control practice for hospitals is also available Please contact us through our Customer Service Centre.
Our molecular biology laboratory is a state-of-the-art facility, which is both SANAS and KENAS accredited and was the first laboratory in the country and the region to be granted ISO 15189 accreditation for the COVID19 PCR test.
Our Molecular biology offering includes molecular testing in the fields of infectious disease and molecular oncology. Genetic disease, and DNA profiling is also available. Screening tests such as the HPV PCR test are also available.
